Album Review
NEW YORK | APRIL 2, 2021 | In 2021, chaos, anxiety, and exhaustion all seem to have settled in the midst of this ongoing battle with the coronavirus pandemic. As spring swiftly approaches, in a year that seems to still hold potential, Nouhi’s Nomad appears out of the abyss and provides us with a soundtrack containing all the right notes.

In this debut LP Nouhi’s Nomad, a.k.a Zachary Tirgan, brings tracks fit for the warmer weather to come. With calming indie sounds, Nouhi’s Nomad transports us to a place of serenity with lyrics that remind us of loves lost, places once seen, and time as a mechanism that can heal.
Through a diverse range of songs, influenced by Zachary’s own Persian background, Nouhi’s Nomad adds an interesting twist to their indie rock album by including their track “Angeezeh,” a tasteful choice in reminding us just who Nouhi’s Nomad is, and why we must listen. Throughout the album Nouhi’s Nomad reminds us of their vulnerability, their rawness, and their humanness; not only in their lyrics but also in their voice. The emotion that Nouhi’s Nomad put into each track becomes distinctly clear in their track “The Song I Can’t Rewrite.” When the chorus starts and Nouhi’s Nomad (Zachary Tirgan) belts out the words “sorry for all the hurt I put you through…” the character becomes evident. He is like us, despite the unique stage name, this is a human, feeling and being. This is what really makes the listener relate to Nouhi’s Nomad, and this is what makes this song the one that deserves to be played on repeat.
Lyrically, the listener is drawn in by the vulnerability Nouhi’s Nomad portrays talking about their love. There is a “her” mentioned in multiple songs leaving one to wonder who this might be and will we know more about her? However, Nouhi’s Nomad owns his own identity as well in the song “Take It Back” and on a more subtle note, in “Angeezeh.” In this strange but emotional and unique vein that Nouhi’s Nomad has decided to take on this album, they leave a lot of room for where he might go from here.
Ultimately, Nouhi’s Nomad produces a soundtrack that seems to fit perfectly in Spotify’s “Surf Rock Sunshine” playlist. Turning out sounds that are well developed, and could easily turn into indie rock classics, Nouhi’s Nomad starts off strong, leaving the listener, and myself, waiting and wanting more.

About the Artist

Nouhi’s Nomad is an Iranian-American multi-instrumentalist genre-fluid creator based in New York City. Nomad showed an early interest in music, starting with the violin at the age of three before moving to the piano at age eight. He later studied percussion, notably the tombak. At age twelve he found his calling as a singer and began studying classical voice and singing in professional choirs. He picked up guitar and bass finally in college. Nomad is also a graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts where he sang the title character of Orpheus in their production of Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach. In addition to his background in classical music, Persian music and contemporary rock are a few more of his influences — with all three shining through within his Persian percussion, hypnotic and unique melodies, as well as stripped-down guitar backings. Nomad’s upcoming self-titled album further expands on these influences, while still leaving much room for experimentation. Bringing a warm and vintage style and sensitive lyrics to the forefront, Nouhi’s Nomad is a refreshing modern listen for anyone with a love of indie rock and the groovy state of nostalgia.
